Club History
In the later part of the 1980's a group of like-minded citizens and business leaders in Bunbury saw the need for a theatre to add to the cultural life of the SouthWest. A Fund Raising Committee was formed that raised more than $2 million for the construction of the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre with the balance of funding coming from the City and State Governments. Major individual and corporate donors are recognised in the foyer of the Theatre. The Theatre was officially opened in 1990.
The successful operation of the Centre relies on the co-operative and co-ordinated efforts of:
The Board of Management
The Centre Manager
The BREC Club
The Board of Management, who are volunteers and elected, provide overall strategic direction for the Centre and ensure the financial viability of the venue. The Board operates the Centre on behalf of the owners, Bunbury City Council. The Centre Manager, along with his staff is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Centre, securing shows for the Centre as well as long term planning.
The BREC Club is a group of citizens dedicated to supporting the Centre and the Performing Arts in the South West.
Many members of the BREC Club volunteer their time and energy to fulfill Front of House duties. They act as doorkeepers, ushers, bar and coffee bar, merchandise sales or as members of the mail out team. The BREC Club has the responsibility for ensuring that there are sufficient volunteers for each performance throughout the year. Over the course of the year, members of the BREC Club fill over 2,000 volunteer positions. The BREC Club volunteers present a professional image to the public who visit the theatre for live artistic performances, jazz festivals, art-house cinema, the Eisteddfod, school and university graduations, radio broadcasts and parliamentary sittings.
The BREC Club volunteers are justifiably proud of the role they play in the operation of the Centre. No other theatre in Australia is able to rely on such a committed volunteer corps to successfully fulfill these responsibilities.
Not everyone is able to volunteer, but members support the arts in other ways. For example, the BREC Club provides a bi-annual Performing Arts Grant to a local group to assist with the staging of a production at the Centre. In addition, annual trophies are awarded at the SouthWest Drama Festival and at the Eisteddfod.
Furthermore, the Club supports the Centre by providing funds for the purchase of specialised equipment such as the electronic sign outside the Centre and the CCTV system in the foyer.
