Death and grief are daunting topics to discuss so when it comes to children, it can leave many bewildered.
For this reason William Barrett and Sons has invited renowned author, educator, parenting and resilience specialist Maggie Dent to the South West to share her views and experiences. It is part of an ongoing effort by William Barrett and Sons to encourage and normalise more open discussions on the topic of grief and to ensure our community is equipped to offer the support to those who need it following a death.
This session will be perfect for those who work with children as well as parents.
Maggie has a particular interest in the early years and adolescence but she also has wealth of experience and expertise on the topic of death and bereavement.
She is passionate advocate for the healthy, common-sense raising of children in order to strengthen families and communities. Her has a broad perspective and range of experience which shapes her work, a slightly irreverent sense of humour and a depth of knowledge based on modern research and ancient wisdom which she shares passionately in a common-sense way.
Maggie grew up on a farm in the rural South West of WA with 4000 acres and 10,000 sheep. Her childhood and adolescence were shadowed by low self-esteem, and this experience built the foundation for her work today.
She was a high school teacher for 17 years before working as a counsellor with young people and their families, in suicide prevention and in palliative care. Her experience also included working as a radio announcer on ABC in WA, in the funeral industry, and as a marriage and funeral celebrant.
Maggie's finest achievements are her four spunky sons, deep human connectedness and her five books which include:
• Saving Our Children from Our Chaotic World: Teaching Children the Magic of Silence and Stillness (rev ed, 2009)
• Nurturing Kids' Hearts and Souls: Building Emotional, Social and Spiritual Competency (rev ed 2010)
• Real Kids in an Unreal World: How to Build Resilience and Self Esteem in Today's Children… (2009)
• Saving Our Adolescents: Supporting Today's Adolescents through the Bumpy Ride to Adulthood (2010)
• Black Duck Wisdom (rev ed 2011)
As well as being an author and presenter, Maggie is a prolific creator of resources for parents, adolescents, teachers, educators and others who are interested in quietly improving their lives.
