Bartok, Shostakovich, Arvo Pärt and the uncrushable human spirit.

This is a program that explores the ever-present clash that exists within humanity: our twin urges to seek peace and joy, and to wage war. Music of War and Peace presented by the Australian Chamber Orchestra will feature ACO Collective led by British guest director and violinist Matthew Truscott.

Inspired by World War II, the two main works from the program are Bartok’s energetic and folk-driven Divertimento for Strings, and Dmitri Shostakovich’s rousing Chamber Symphony. The concert also features the popular Baroque work Battalia by Heinrich Biber, and the serene Fratres by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. “Music of War and Peace” promises an emotive musical journey across numerous styles, centuries, countries and genres, performed with the intense brilliance of the engaging and dynamic ACO Collective.

UK violinist Matthew Truscott is concertmaster of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and one of the leaders of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. He is an incredibly versatile musician who shares his time between period instrument music and ‘modern’ performance, and has directed orchestral performances from the violin in many of the world’s great venues, including Carnegie Hall, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Berlin Philharmonie and Vienna Musikverein, as well as at the and BBC Proms in London.
