A Bunch of Amateurs (M)

‘Bradford Movie Makers, founded in 1932, is in trouble. Their membership is getting older and smaller year on year. The clubhouse is falling apart, and five years late on its rent. Anonymous ruffians keep dumping white goods in front of their door, and Harry wants to remake the famous opening scene of Oklahoma! without going anywhere near a horse.’ – Film Story

Desperately clinging to their dreams, and to each other, the Movie Makers are fuelled by endless cups of tea. Only a miracle can save Britain’s oldest amateur film club from its final demise. Sometimes miracles come from unexpected places. This quietly hilarious, profoundly moving portrait of shared artistic folly speaks to the delusional escapist dreamer in us all, and to the need to spend time together face to face in an increasingly lonely, digital age. A documentary full of quirky characters and quintessential British humour, A Bunch of Amateurs is sure to delight.

‘A thoroughly moving and ultimately joyful affair.’’
Laurence Boyce, Cineuropa

‘You could imagine a BBC sitcom series inspired by this. Give Bill Nighy a few years and he’d be perfect to play Colin.’
Cath Clarke, Guardian

‘Kim Hopkins’ thoughtful documentary about the Bradford Movie Makers club has some unexpectedly deep things to say about camaraderie, community and male friendship.’
Cath Clarke, The Guardian

‘The importance of community, art and a restorative mug of tea are the main messages of this inspiring and wryly amusing documentary.’
Andy Lea, Daily Express
