Black Dog [M]

After a decade-long absence, a cynical Lang (Eddie Peng) returns to his dilapidated hometown which has been overrun by stray dogs. No one is happy to see him back and his past comes back to haunt him. To make ends meet, Lang’s old friend Nie arranges for him to join the town’s dog patrol team, where he spends his days transporting stray dogs in a truck as part of a nationwide clean-up effort ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

When a likely black whippet that has been eluding the dogcatchers comes into his life, Lang is moved by the dog’s ability to survive against the odds. Forced by events into spending time together, Lang and the dog gradually develop an emotional bond, recognising one another as kindred spirits. After deliberately repressing his feelings for years, Lang’s sense of compassion is reawakened. He decides it is time to take action – not only to save as many stray dogs as he can, but also to fight for the redemption of his soul.

Eddie Peng’s powerful performance anchors this neo-noir western, winner of Cannes Un Certain Regard in 2024. Black Dog also won – taking out the Cannes 2024 ‘Palm Dog Award’!

“The real star is Black Dog himself, who navigates the arc from misunderstood arse-biter to brave and noble hound with real aplomb”
– Screen International

“Has the grandly cinematic vision to lend an intimate tale a gloriously epic, allegorical edge …dipped in the caustic soda of social commentary and steeped in the tradition of film noir.”
– Variety

“Set against a backdrop of urban blight and canine chaos, Guan’s highly original, deadpan thriller begins with a jarring sequence of dogs causing a bus to flip over on a desert road, only to get weirder and wilder from there.”
– Hollywood Reporter

“Black Dog registers as an existential fable about isolation, redemption, the possibility of making connections against the odds. It is also a crime thriller and a dazzling piece of landscape cinema.”
– Financial Times
