A vibrant celebration of ingenuity and energy. Energetic, hilarious, groundbreaking.
Direct from North East Arnhem Land, comes Indigenous dance sensation Djuki Mala. Since their viral video ‘Zorba the Greek’ took the world by storm in 2007 they have performed all around Australia and across the globe.
Dressed in traditional costumes and ochre, with Gara (spears) & Galpu (spear thrower) they create work that warms the heart and soul. Their performances are a spectacular fusion of traditional dance, pop-culture, comedy and clowning; but behind the humour is startling movement skill and discipline, drawn from traditional culture and dance.
Their second major self-title production was built on Elcho Island in a cramped training centre with low-slung fans and a fridge door that doubled as a change room. This peformance tells the genesis of Djuki Mala, interspersed with multimedia that gives audiences the opportunity to experience some of the more intimate moments and turning points that have shaped them.
After opening to standing ovations at the Darwin Entertainment Centre and multiple award nominations and wins, Djuki Mala offers a rare and insightful view into Indigenous Australia.
