Winner of the 2020 Adelaide Film Festival Documentary award, Firestarter: The Story of Bangarra tells the story of how three Aboriginal boys took a tiny dance company in its infancy and turned it into a world renowned powerhouse.
Firestarter: The Story of Bangarra recognises Bangarra Dance Theatre’s early founders and tells the story of how three young Aboriginal brothers – Stephen, David and Russell Page – turned the newly born dance group into one of Australia’s leading performing arts companies. All three were driven to share and preserve Indigenous stories and culture through their art, and to inspire the next generation of First Nations artists.
Thirty years on, through the eyes of the Page brothers and company alumni, Firestarter explores the loss and reclaiming of culture, the burden of intergenerational trauma and crucially, the extraordinary power of art as a messenger for social change and healing.
Following the company through their annual program of national and international tours, this captivating documentary features a combination of intimate observational material, combined with candid interviews and a treasure trove of archival footage – revealing the dance company’s spectacular rise and triumph against the odds.
A stunning hybrid of factual and dramatic storytelling, Firestarter is a tale of pride, heartbreak, adversity and empowerment – with the transformative strength of Indigenous dance at its centre.
