An intimate and epic journey in the female experience of war, For Sama is a love letter from a young mother to her daughter set against the backdrop of the Syrian civil war.
Awarded the Prix L’Œil d’Or for Best Documentary at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and nominated for an Academy Award, For Sama is a love letter from a young mother to her daughter.
The film tells the story of Syrian mother Waad al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo. When the conflict began she became a citizen reporter using her mobile’s camera and sending images of attacks on civilians to international media. Deciding to stay in Syria against her parents’ wishes, she falls in love with Hamza, one of Aleppo’s few remaining doctors, gets married and gives birth to Sama, all while cataclysmic conflict rises around her.
Waad keeps filming, determined to bring the daily atrocities to the attention of the world. Her camera captures incredible stories of loss, but also of laughter and survival as she wrestles with an impossible choice – whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much.
For Sama weaves the very human and personal with the politics of war and confronting footage from one of the world’s worst conflict zones this century, in a film that challenges audiences even as it offers unexpected glimpses of hope, love and joy in the midst of tragedy.
