Beautifully crafted musical stories
Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse are award winning artists whose music is a celebration of life, community and a shared humanity. The depth of their talent is extraordinary. With a reputation for bringing a fresh take on ancient traditions and merging evocative sounds, they are natural storytellers through song. Their use of rare Noongar language in their song writing perfectly captures the essence of two best friends, performing beautifully crafted musical stories.
Prior to being named 2020 Artists of the Year, Gina and Guy have been named Indigenous Artist of the Year at the 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018 WA Music Industry Awards.
Their performances are a true celebration of things we share and their work is underpinned by four principles of Koort (Heart), Moort (Family), Boodja (Land) and Koorlangka (Children/Legacy).
“simply wonderful music brilliantly performed, bringing the Noongar language to the hearts and minds of a wider audience” Bourby Webster Seesaw Magazine
Date Thursday 18th February
Duration 60 mins
In partnership with BREC, Gina and Guy invite all sectors of the community, grandparents and elders, parents, aunties and uncles and children to learn a simple song in Noongar language, and join them for an interactive session of storytelling and music and collectively singing our country strong again.
In 2009, Gina wrote a simple little song, incorporating the elements of a Welcome to Country. The intent of the song, Wanjoo (Welcome), was to be used by Gina and her three children.
Fast forward to today, Gina and Guy have shared it with close to 750,000 people across the country. They have taught it across Australia and it is being sung in New Zealand, Canada, America, France (and) Guam, Indonesia and Japan.
It is also the basis for their enormously popular Wanjoo workshops which cover the importance of keeping Noongar language and culture alive, teaching the students Wanjoo (the Welcome Song), the correct pronunciation of the lyrics and the importance of saying welcome.
