Winner of three major awards at Sundance 2021, this outstanding drama is based on the true story of a Kosovo war widow fighting against patriarchy.
. Like many women, beekeeper Fahrije is hoping for news about her husband, who is still missing seven years after the war. To provide for her family she joins forces with other widows to start a business.
This debut feature by Kosovo-born filmmaker Blerta Basholli is inspired by real-life beekeeper Fahrije Hoti and is Kosovo’s official submission for Best International Feature at the 94th Academy Awards.
Like many women in Kosovo, Fahrije (Yllka Gashi) is still battling grief and hoping for news about her husband, who remains missing seven years after the war. Widows are not expected to work and Fahrije has already scandalised the community by daring to drive. However she has to provide for her family and joins forces with other widows to establish a women’s co-operative business, producing and selling ajvar (pepper relish).
In this patriarchal community, a woman’s morals can be questioned for even the slightest show of independence. Fahrije struggles not only to keep her family afloat, but against a hostile community who seek to violently undermine the independence and sisterhood she is determined to gain. But Fahrije is no ordinary woman.
Blerta Basholli is a writer-director whose stories touch upon social and gender issues in Kosovo, where she was born. Her lean, punchy script and Yllka Gashi’s superbly controlled central performance bring the legacy of war and the strength of women into sharp and rewarding focus.
Hive premiered in the World Cinema Dramatic competition at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, where it won that section’s Grand Jury Prize, Best Director Award, and Audience Award.
