Palestinian filmmaker Elia Suleiman’s alter ego ES goes globetrotting in search of a new native land, but reminders of home pop up everywhere from Paris to New York in this award-winning comic saga.
In this absurdist tale, director/writer/actor Elia Suleiman stars as himself; leaving Nazareth only find Palestine is trailing behind him wherever he goes. It Must Be Heaven asks the fundamental question: where is the place we can truly call home?
Elia Suleiman’s alter ego ES leaves Palestine, seeking an alternative homeland and looking for production funding to get his next film made. Wandering the globe ES find parallels to Palestine everywhere he goes. Tanks roll into the streets of a near-empty Paris, cops ride Segways in balletic formation and citizens casually carry AK-47s in American supermarkets as the promise of his new life turns into a comedy of errors.
Often likened to a modern-day Buster Keaton or Jacques Tati, in This Must Be Heaven Suleiman gently satirises Western attitudes to officialdom and wryly contemplates questions of home, identity and belonging. Winning a Special Mention at Cannes in 2019 as well as the FIPRESCI Prize, this is Elia Suleiman’s first feature in a decade and it offers a delightfully whimsical reflection on what it means to be Palestinian in a global context
