Mirrah Foulkes’s category-defying feature film debut turns the traditional Punch & Judy puppet show on its head in this dark and witty female revenge tale.
It’s the mid-17th century and travelling puppeteers Judy (Mia Wasikowska) and Punch (Damon Herriman) have settled in the landlocked town of Seaside after the birth of their first child. Seaside has spiralled into violence, mob rule and God-fearing hysteria, with the townspeople revelling daily in the real-life drama and brutality of trials and executions.
Judy is clearly the superior puppeteer and possesses the skill and dexterity of a great artist, but it is Punch who owns the limelight. A loveable narcissist with a dangerous penchant for the bottle, his ambition and egomania are the stark opposite of Judy’s gentle, practical nature. It is Judy’s puppeteering genius that ensures their puppet shows are a hit with the baying crowds, offering a glimmer of art and hope. One day Punch’s love of whiskey sets off a chain of slapstick events with inevitable tragic consequences, triggering Judy’s vengeance on Punch and the entire town of Seaside.
