Timothy Spall plays frustrated and as yet ‘undiscovered’ artist L.S. Lowry to Vanessa Redgrave’s portrayal of his cantankerous mother in this British arthouse hit.

Mrs Lowry and Son is the story of now-famous English painter Laurence Stephen (L.S.) Lowry (Timothy Spall) and the life he shared with his over-bearing mother Elizabeth (Vanessa Redgrave).

Set in the Lancashire town of Pendlebury in the 1930s, Lowry has not yet been ‘discovered’. Bed-ridden and bitter, Elizabeth spends her days trying to dissuade Lowry from pursuing his dreams, whilst never failing to remind him what a disappointment he is to her. Lowry works as a rent collector by day and takes art classes in the evenings, before painting into the early hours of the morning. He yearns for his work to be appreciated in London and beyond.

This gentle drama slowly reveals how Lowry’s cantankerous mother is both the obstacle preventing him from achieving his artistic ambitions and the reason he paints at all, as he furiously tries to create something that might make her happy.

Directed by Adrian Noble, a former director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, the all-star cast is complemented by stunningly detailed set and costume design. A recognisable description of the relationship between parent and child, Mrs Lowry and Son is a slow-burning biopic that will warm the hearts of art lovers and novices alike.
