Ricky and his family have been struggling with debt since the 2008 financial crash. While he takes a chance on self-employment and a shiny new van, his wife works as a carer. The family reach breaking point as the dream evaporates.
In this Palme d’Or nominated film, Ken Loach puts the UK’s gig economy under the microscope. From the renowned Director of ‘I, Daniel Blake’, comes the compelling story of Ricky and his family who have been facing an uphill struggle against debt since losing their home in the 2008 financial crash.
An opportunity to wrestle back some independence appears with a shiny new van and the chance to run a franchise as a self-employed delivery driver. Working long hours in a ruthless system, complications mount and his wife’s job as a carer is just as challenging. Their son Seb gets into trouble as he takes up a career as a graffiti artist and the family’s hopes of finally getting ahead fade once again.
A film full of immense heart, Ken Loach’s brutally moving drama paints an all too real picture of the reality of a gig economy.

“Beautifully performed with searing honesty and naturalism by the entire cast, the one reassuring note is that sometimes someone like Loach is there to make sure that stories like these, people like these, are not missed, but seen.”
