Riz Ahmed’s performance is riveting and heartbreaking as Ruben, a recovering addict and drummer touring across America with his girlfriend/lead singer, Lou (Olivia Cooke). When his ear pops during a performance, Ruben thinks little of it at first but his hearing quickly deteriorates.

As this sudden hearing loss turns his world upside down, to Lou’s alarm he starts to spiral and she fears he’ll fall into old habits.
Reluctantly, Ruben agrees to join a shelter for sober living deaf run by deaf army veteran Joe (Paul Raci), where he struggles to make a choice between embracing this new life and striving to retrieve the one he left behind.
Sound of Metal is directed and co-written by Darius Marder and puts a rare spotlight on deaf culture, using astonishing sound design techniques to bring the audience inside Ruben’s experience with cochlear implantation and amplify his journey into a world that is seldom examined.
Among the critically acclaimed film’s accolades were six nominations at the 93rd Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor (Ahmed), Best Supporting Actor (Raci), Best Sound and Best Film Editing, winning the latter two.
