Like a watercolour painting coming to life, this animated drama is set in Kabul, Afghanistan under Taliban rule, where Zunaira and Mohsen are young and in love.
Lauded at film festivals around the world, Zabou Breitman and Éléa Gobbé-Mévellec’s exquisite animated film, The Swallows of Kabul, captures the poetry of Algerian author Yasmina Khadra’s dazzling novel of the same name.
Two couples, two intertwined love stories in the Afghan capital during the nineties – now under Taliban rule.
Zunaira and Mohsen (voiced by Zita Hanrot and Swann Arlaud) are young intellectuals, a painter and a historian respectively, who still dream of the bustling libraries and cinemas of their university days — the kind of dreams long since given up by Atiq (Simon Abkarian), a gruff guard at a women’s prison, and his loyal, terminally ill wife Mussarat (Hiam Abbas).
The very tenderness of the film’s romantic relationships lie in sharp contrast to the violence of lives and loves forever changed by the horrors of war. While The Swallows of Kabul does not seek to soften these blows, it instead draws the audience in, like moths to a flame, thanks to its swathes of gentle watercolour and sensitive insights into tragedies many of us could never comprehend.
