Profound and uplifting, The Extraordinary and its lessons about connection, dignity and equality will stay with audiences long after the film.
For twenty years, Bruno and Malik have lived in a different world — the world of autistic children and teens. In charge of two separate non-profit organisations – The Hatch & The Shelter – they train young people from underprivileged areas to be caregivers for extreme cases that have been refused by all other institutions.
As the dedicated carer Bruno, Vincent Cassel, demonstrates his talent in an extraordinary, no-limits performance. Struggling for both staff and money, Bruno is the heart and soul of his uncertified shelter, which comes under threat when authorities start investigating it.
The Extraordinary is another unforgettable powerhouse film from giants of French filmmaking, Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano (The Intouchables, C’est La Vie). Despite the hard-hitting subject matter, the film gains levity through many moments of grace and humour.
Based on the real-life figure of Stéphane Benhamou, The Extraordinary does a remarkable job of delivering both heart and a very vivid depiction of life on the frontlines of mental health care and an understanding of those living with disabilities.
