The Beggars Australian SongbookWednesday 23 May, 7.30pm Australian Songbook is a musical tribute including songs from The Seekers, Peter Dawson, Johnny O'Keefe, Lucky Starr, Chad Morgan, Slim Dusty, and The Beggars. You can heave away and haul your way round Cape Horn Bound for South Australia or sail the Southern Ocean hunting The Whale, go Waltzing Matilda down to the billabong and find out what really happened to that jolly swagman, do your noble duty at Sulva Bay in the Great War, go back home on the Road to Gundagai, and be the guest at the Fatal Wedding. The Beggars round out the musical journey with the tongue twisting I've Been Everywhere as we all sing-along with the songs from our Australian Songbook. Future Shorts - Music N' MoviesFriday 25 May, 7pm Future Shorts is a short film festival showcasing a selection of the best in short films from around the globe. Be it funny, dark, heartfelt or just plain weird, you’ll find it here at Future Shorts. You asked for it, so now Future Shorts is even bigger than ever with live music before and after the films! It’s a great opportunity to hear the fresh talent of young local musos in a unique and funky new setting.This month, Less Than Three and Amanda Pusey will play live! Future Shorts takes place in over 30 countries and 60 cities with over 140 screenings, showing a single programme of the best short films often alongside live music, DJs and art. Cooee CabaretMonday 28 May, 7.30pm For the first time in Western Australia: Cooee Cabaret – 'The Sounds of Australia' live on stage in a FREE community performance! Cooee Cabaret is an original family cabaret show that weaves together iconic Australian songs and sound recordings, drawn from the NFSA’s Sounds of Australia registry. Created by contemporary musical director and cabaret performer Nigel Ubrihien, the show is a fun, magical journey through the history of sound and song in Australia, from the earliest recordings of Indigenous language in the late 1890s, through well-loved advertising jingles and radio broadcasts, to popular contemporary music. Cooee Cabaret will delight both young and old (and all those in between!) as the audience discovers and learns more about these songs and sounds, with the help of three mischievous and engaging characters, played by Nigel and talented young character actors, Stephen Anderson and Guy Simon. Cooee Cabaret also includes local poet, Kate Wilson – performing her original work Away, and singer/songwriter Peter Blankendaal performing his original song Old Drovers.Not to be left out, audiences will also be encouraged to sing along to their favourite Aussie tunes and jingles and nominate their own favourite Sound of Australia!
