ANATOMY OF A FALL (MA 15+)

Bristling with emotional depth, this electric Palme d’Or–winning courtroom drama puts the complexities of a relationship on trial.

Sandra, a German writer, lives with her French husband Samuel and their visually impaired son Daniel in a remote mountain chalet in the French Alps. When Samuel falls to his death in mysterious circumstances, the investigation cannot determine whether it’s suicide or foul play. Sandra is ultimately arrested for murder and the trial puts their tumultuous relationship and her ambiguous personality under the microscope.

For the past year, Sandra, Samuel and their eleven-year-old son Daniel have lived a secluded life in a remote Alpine town. When Samuel is found dead in the snow below their chalet, his death is treated as suspicious, presumed murder, and Sandra becomes the main suspect. Little by little the trial becomes not just an investigation of the circumstances of Samuel’s death, but an unsettling psychological journey into the depths of Sandra and Samuel’s conflicted relationship.

“Triet’s piercing film holds the ambient tensions and illogical loose ends of domestic life against the harsh and rational light of [the] legal system … A cyclone that sends the mind soaring, and primes the heart for a hefty fall.”
