In a Mexican border town plagued by neglect, corruption, and violence, a frustrated teacher (Eugenio Derbez) tries a radical new method to break through his students’ apathy and unlock their curiosity, their potential… and maybe even their genius. Based on a true story.
Who will the sixth grade students at Jose Urbina Lopez Elementary in Matamoros become? They are among the worst performing students in Mexico, the only world they know is one of violence and hardship, and their classrooms are dominated by an atmosphere of overbearing discipline, not possibility.
It might seem like a dead end… but it is also the perfect place for new teacher Sergio Juarez to try something different. There’s just one problem: Sergio (played by an amazing Eugenio Derbez, CODA) has no idea what he’s doing.
Frustrated, Sergio tries a radical new approach to break through his student’s apathy. Along the way, he finds that some of the children have extraordinary talents, particularly Paloma (Jennifer Trejo) who dreams of becoming an aerospace engineer.
Sundance Audience Award winner, RADICAL finely balances the tragedies inevitable in the face of the pervasive poverty, random violence and corruption of this north eastern border town, with an infectious sense of optimism. An incredible tale of possibility and hope, this is an absolute gem of a film.
‘Christopher Zalla’s resolute crowd-pleaser “Radical” is a heart-tugger in the mould of such old-school “inspiring teacher changes everything” tales as “To Sir With Love,” “Dead Poets Society” and even recent Oscar winner “CODA,” with broad audience appeal — watch it without tissues at your own risk…”
