Uproar (M)

A 17 year-old student is forced to get off the fence he has actively sat on all his life to stand up for himself, his whanau (family) and his future in this heart-warming story of identity.

Dunedin, 1981. The Springboks are touring New Zealand, sparking nationwide protests. Josh Waaka, 17, is a square peg in the round, rugby-obsessed hole that is St Gilbert’s College.

Under pressure from home and school to conform, Josh, who has never felt like he fits in anywhere, sees a way to escape his oppressive environment when his English teacher recommends he audition for drama school…until his mum Shirley finds him a position in the First XV alongside his brother Jamie.

Inspired by the protests and his newfound passion for performing Josh continues to rehearse in secret for the audition. A sequence of events sees Josh embrace his community and his Maori heritage, taking him and his family on a journey towards healing.

“It’s a uniquely Kiwi film that also speaks to wider global and societal issues in a distinctly personal way. Uproar is a movie that deserves to be shouted about.”
New Zealand Herald

“Dennison once again brings his signature warmth, humour, and pathos for a singular and deeply affecting performance.”
Roger Ebert

“Coming-of-age teen dramas are exceptional when done right. Uproar takes that genre and adds some very specific elements about the New Zealand indigenous culture of the
Maori into its story.”
