BREC Volunteers build connections through arts and culture

The Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre is celebrating the people at the heart of the arts this National Volunteer Week, recognising the dedicated volunteers who help welcome audiences through the doors for every show.

From greeting patrons to assisting with ushering, ticket scanning, bars and front of house services, volunteers are an essential part of every performance at BREC. The contribution of BREC’s 150 volunteers supports hundreds of events and community gatherings annually, helping connect local audiences with culture and the arts.

Volunteers at BREC get opportunities to see performances they work at. But for many volunteers, the role offers far more than simply attending shows. Volunteering is an easy way to meet new people, stay socially connected, build confidence and become more involved in the local arts community.

BREC volunteer Connie Bucchino, who has been part of the organisation for more than 30 years, said volunteering had strengthened her connection to Bunbury and the local community.

“I just enjoy it. I like meeting people, seeing the shows, and helping people,” she said.
“It makes me very proud of Bunbury.”

On top of forming bonds with fellow lovers of the arts, BREC volunteers play an essential role in the community through their support of local arts and culture. Large scale events like the Bunbury Eisteddfod, BREC International Film Festivals, and the many school balls and graduation ceremonies couldn’t go ahead without a huge commitment from the volunteers who make them possible.

Volunteer roles at BREC are flexible, with volunteers able to nominate the events and performances that interest them most. Opportunities include ushering, door keeping, and serving at the café. Volunteers with an RSA Certificate have the chance to gain real workplace experience behind the bars.

Helen Helmsley said joining the volunteer team after retirement had been a positive and welcoming experience.

“There’s a lot of people who are really enjoying themselves. It’s a really fun atmosphere to come into.”
