Chorus: Community Dance Project

Local choreographer, Annette Carmichael, is seeking 200 women to create her next large-scale dance performance, Chorus.

Chorus is a community dance project that brings together women from Bunbury, Denmark, Mandurah, Ravensthorpe, Perth and Albany to create an original dance work that will be performed on the long weekend in March 2020 in Denmark, WA.

Annette grew up in Bunbury and now lives in Denmark. She is a nationally recognised leader in creating original dance works with regional communities. In 2018 she was shortlisted for an Australian Dance Award and earlier this year was part of the Australia delegation attending a major international meeting in the UK on inclusive performing arts.

When describing the project Annette said, “Chorus is a dance project that calls for the end of violence against women. It will be a performance filled with hope and optimism that explores the strength and solidarity of women. It is inspired by the peace marches and group actions of women across the world calling for equality and demanding safety.”

Annette goes on to say, “through the process of creating this original dance work we are also creating new social networks and new friendships that will add another layer of support for women in each community.”

Annette is inviting women aged 14 years and over to participate in the project. No prior dance experience is required. The performance utilises contemporary dance which is created in collaboration with the participants and suits many different ages and abilities.

For Bunbury-Geographe women, there will be a weekend of taster workshops led by Annette with Bunbury artist and educator, Dr Vahri McKenzie. These taster workshops are for women to try out the style of dance and hear more about the themes of the project.
