To our valued BREC Film Festival Patrons,

By now, you may have noticed we have not announced the BREC International Film Festival for the summer of 2023.

Being honest and realistic about where we currently find ourselves, we have recently had to make some more difficult choices. Sadly, the decision not to hold our much-anticipated film festival this summer was one of them.

I recognise this news will be extremely disappointing to our many loyal film patrons and for that I am truly sorry. I will miss it myself. I love spending hot summer days in the Cube, glass in hand, travelling the world vicariously through international film, then munching on toasted Panini afterwards in the Skybar while chatting with friends!

Internationally the performing arts are still significantly affected by the unique challenges of the last three years and the global pandemic – and BREC is not exempt from these negative impacts. Rebuilding audiences, finding the right people for our team and regaining our footing financially continue to present difficulties, but we are committed in our efforts to find a balance between recovery and progression.

The time and resources which go into bringing you the BREC film festivals, with their focus on first and recent release international films of quality, are easy to underestimate. There are many moving parts in successfully designing and delivering projects of this depth and scale.

Given we were unsuccessful in securing the necessary funding to underpin the usual subsidised festival ticket prices, and the enormous workload in putting the program together, we have made the choice to not offer the festival this year as part of our efforts to stabilise and rebuild.

Rest assured we intend to be back with more BREC Film as soon as possible. In the meantime we continue to move forward and have a huge line up of entertainment gracing BREC stages in 2023.

And it’s not all bad news for film lovers. We will be announcing an exciting one-off opportunity to indulge in big screen cinematic magic very shortly, so watch this space.

I hope for your patience, support and continued patronage to enable us to continue to bring world-class entertainment to Bunbury and look forward to catching up with you at a film or show in the coming year.
