From Manjimup to Brazil – a writer’s story
Manjimup-based artist Kim Crotty’s autobiographical play The Smallest Stage began with 47 hand-illustrated stories he wrote for his young sons while imprisoned in the UK. Shared with South West artists at BREC’s inaugural Artist Retreat in 2019, the stories became the starting point for a new work developed with BREC and a WA creative team.
After premiering at BREC in 2022 and winning the Performing Arts WA Award for Best Mainstage Theatre Production, The Smallest Stage has now travelled much further than anyone imagined. Translated into Portuguese and produced by Brazilian company Elephante Produções, the new production The Smallest Stage in the World will premiere in São Paulo in October 2026.
