It Was Just an Accident
Yek Tasadef Sadeh | Un Simple Accident

A Palme d’Or winning, morally fraught thriller that grabs you and holds you long after the credits roll.

The story ignites when a traveller with a distinctively squeaky prosthetic leg arrives at Vahid’s auto-repair shop one night following a minor fender bender. Although he was always blindfolded, Vahid would recognise that noise anywhere and becomes convinced this man is responsible for his brutal torture during his time as a political prisoner years before.

Seizing this destined opportunity for revenge, Vahid abducts the man and transports him to the desert, intending to bury him alive. But before he can do the deed, Vahid’s conscience halts him: what if he’s kidnapped the wrong person? What if he is wrong? Can he trust a single sense in condemning a man to death?

Over a frenzied 24 hours, he sets out to find other former prisoners who can verify the man’s identity, amassing an unlikely group of co-conspirators along the way, each of whom carries their own motivation for vengeance.

Writer / Director Jafar Panahi has been a political prisoner himself, imprisoned for seven years for making films that speak out against the Iranian regime. Here, his experience leads as he takes the audience on a thrilling, emotionally devastating rollercoaster where one small mishap starts a chain reaction of ever-increasing problems.

“Iran’s Jafar Panahi is a unique and unforgettable world-class film artist who aches for justice for his traumatized characters, of which he is one. This is a cry from his bruised heart.”
Peter Travers, The Travers Take

“If anyone has the right to make a revenge fantasy, it’s Jafar Panahi. And yet, this movie isn’t that. Panahi doesn’t make statement films; he makes question films, designed to instigate soul-searching and debate.”
Janice Page, The Washington Post

“Panahi reaches some kind of terrible career high. This is a movie born out of a lifetime that no one should have been forced to endure. And yet, the film world is stronger for the suffering.”
Barry Hertz, Globe and Mail
