An intimate portrait from the streets of Casablanca, Adam explores the power of compassion and friendship in transforming the lives of two very different women.
Abla survives by running a tiny bakery from her home in a Casablanca medina, where she lives alone with her delightful young daughter, Warda. When Samia (Nisrin Erradi), a young pregnant woman knocks on their door, Abla (Lubna Azabal) is far from imagining that her life will change forever.
As they begin baking Moroccan pastries together, an unlikely friendship develops between these two very different women – one a lonely widow and the other unmarried and pregnant in a country that still bans sex while single. When conservative values threaten both women’s freedoms, and as Samia struggles to prepare for her growing baby, the bond they grow to share could be the saving of them both.
Inspired by a childhood experience, writer/director Maryam Touzani’s feature début is a beautiful, intimate portrait, shot mostly in close-up, of two women, and one little girl, who help each other move on with their difficult lives. Understated but powerful, this is a story about real compassion, about motherhood, and about the importance of caring for those in need.
