First Light
Sister Yolanda has spent her life serving God and caring for her mountain community in the Philippines as a nurse and resident of a remote convent. Quietly respected for her grace and selflessness, her faith is shaken when she is called to perform last rites for a young construction worker dying under unusual circumstances.
As questions surrounding the boy’s death begin to weigh on her conscience, Yolanda becomes entangled in the lives of those around her – including a young novice nun, an affluent local woman and the worker’s grieving father. First Light is a meditative and emotionally resonant drama about faith, morality and the cost of devotion.
Winner | Melbourne International Film Festival – Best Australian Director
Nominated | Melbourne International Film Festival – Bright Horizons Award
Nominated | Marrakech International Film Festival – Étoile d’Or (Gold Star)
Nominated | Glasgow Film Festival – Audience Award
“The natural beauty of Luzon in the Philippines provides a striking backdrop to a precisely crafted, meditative exploration of ethics, morals and blind faith.”
– Screen International
“First Light stands out not for celebrity cachet but for the quiet conviction of its storytelling and the clarity of its gaze. Robinson has delivered not just a debut worth noting, but a work that firmly announces a major new voice in Australian and Southeast Asian cinema. This is a quiet miracle of a film.”
