Io Capitano [MA 15+]
An epic, cinematographically magnificent odyssey from West Africa to Europe.
IO CAPITANO (ME CAPTAIN) is the epic story of two young Senegalese cousins, Seydou and Moussa, who yearn for a brighter future in Europe. Enticed by the dream of becoming rich and famous as a musician, they ignore repeated warnings about the dangers and secretly leave Dakar for Italy. Yet between their dreams and reality lies a treacherous journey through a labyrinth of checkpoints, the scorched Saharan desert, a fetid North African prison and the vast waters of the Mediterranean where thousands have died packed inside vessels barely fit for passage. Somehow
Filmed in Senegal, Morocco and Italy, Writer/Director Matteo Garrone (Gormorrah, Dogman) presents a “reverse shot” of the economic immigration experience while unfurling an epic, cinematographically magnificent odyssey from West Africa to Europe.
The film features a cast of mostly nonprofessional actors, chief among them Seydou Sarr, who won the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actor at the 2023 Venice Film Festival. Throughout their harrowing journey, as his illusions are shattered, his character somehow maintains a compassionate empathy for those who share his plight. Shortlisted for Best International Feature at the 2024 Academy Awards, Golden Globe Nominee, Winner of Best Director at the Venice Film Festival and numerous other awards, IO CAPITANO is one of the standout films of the year.
“Io Capitano is a deeply moving film that takes us into a world utterly removed from our own.”
The Australian
“Seydou Sarr is wonderful as a 16-year-old Senegalese migrant who maintains his empathy and selflessness through a hellish journey to Europe… a gangly string bean with a smile that warms the screen… It’s a gorgeous, sensitive performance from Sarr.”
The Guardian
“There have been other films about the perils of illegal immigration, but few have struck me with the force of Matteo Garrone’s Io Capitano.”
Sandra Hall, Sydney Morning Herald
“This is no walk in the park, but a work of exceptional value.”
Sergio Burstein, Los Angeles Times
“ … [Garrone’s] most robust, purely satisfying filmmaking since his international breakthrough.”
