Toni [M]

Exploring concurrent themes of loss of identity and empty nest syndrome, TONI follows a mother raising her five teenage children alone as she seeks to answer the question of who are you when you can no longer solely identify as mum?

Toni has spent her entire life putting other people’s needs before her own. When she was 20 she was pushed by her mother to join a TV singing competition, becoming a national star. Twenty years and five children later, she is a full-time mom who spends all her time and effort on raising her teenage kids.

Despite her brief taste of fame twenty years ago, Toni’s life is very much an ordinary one, structured around kids and their squabbles, meals, laundry, housecleaning and work. As her two eldest children prepare to start university, she finds herself questioning her life and where she will go next. At 43, is there still time to try something new?

As she helps her children plan their future after graduation, she begins to imagine what her life could be if – for once – she did what she really wanted. Will she be able to turn her life around and dare to be something other than a mother and a daughter?

One of the stars of the hugely popular French television comedy series Call My Agent! and recent blockbusters including A Haunting in Venice, French actor Camille Cottin continues to impress with her versatility in the lead role of Toni.

With a winning blend of empathy and humour, Toni explores the dynamics of parenthood, family, and the delicate art of balancing work and life. Moments of touching sincerity are offset by enjoyably awkward humour in this tender and good-natured film.

“A poignant portrait of a woman and a moving portrait of a family, with striking accuracy and delicacy.”
