Little Amélie or The Character of Rain

Amélie spends her earliest years observing the world in silence, overwhelmed by colour, nature and emotion inside her family’s home in Japan. That is until an earthquake – and a piece of Belgian white chocolate – shake her from her quiet inner world. With the gentle guidance of her friend Nishio-san, every garden path and household ritual becomes an adventure of discovery. But on her third birthday, a single event changes everything, and Amélie is forced to confront loss for the first time.

Adapted from Amélie Nothomb’s beloved novel and nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, this luminous animation captures the wonder and vulnerability of growing up.

Official Selection | Cannes International Film Festival 2025

Winner | Annecy International Animation Film Festival – Audience Award

Nomination | 98th Academy Awards – Best Animated Feature

Nomination | 2025 Golden Globe Awards – Best Animated Motion Picture

“An involving, poignant study of early childhood; how fragile it is, and how strong you feel yourself to be to have outlived or surpassed it”
– The Guardian

“Even when the film does touch darkness… there’s an abiding softness to Little Amélie’s line-light animation, an authentically child-like internal logic guiding the writing, that shines through.”
– Empire Magazine

“A poetic and strikingly beautiful work: it looks like a shimmering watercolour painting. It combines moments of playful, droll humour with darker themes, such as bereavement, grief and the still-fresh scars of the second world war”
– The Observer (UK)
