Bookworm [PG]

Elijah Wood stars as a wayward but well-meaning dad in this magical father–daughter quest set in the rugged New Zealand wilderness. Appealing to both the young and the young-at-heart, Bookworm is a fantastical coming of age odyssey. Filmed in the Canterbury Region’s MacKenzie Basin, Bookworm captures not only the ups and downs of family, fatherhood and adventure, but also the breathtaking beauty of the New Zealand landscape.

11-year-old Mildred’s (Nell Fisher) world is turned upside down when her mother becomes ill and lands in hospital, prompting her long estranged father (Elijah Wood), the washed-up magician known as Strawn Wise, to come and look after her.

Trying to win over the bookish tween, Strawn agrees to take her camping to find a mythological beast known as the Canterbury Panther in an attempt to win a $50,000 reward for proving its existence. As the two set off in the rugged New Zealand wilderness, an epic and endearing adventure unfolds with plenty of laughs along the way.

“Ant Timpson’s heartwarming Bookworm is an effulgent love letter to ’80s kid cinema laced with a distinctly quirky, Kiwi dryness.”
– Slant Magazine

“A delightfully quirky father-daughter adventure with the perfect blend of childlike wonder and grown-up bite.”
– Variety

“Thoughtful, entertaining, humorous…”
– The Australian

“Bookworm is pure cinematic dopamine.”
– Cinapse

“Boasting elements that parents and kids alike will adore, Bookworm is proof that the live-action, family-friendly adventure genre is still alive and kicking.”
– Mashable
