My Favourite Cake [M]

Mahin (70) lives alone in Tehran following her husband’s death and her daughter’s departure for Europe, until an afternoon tea with friends leads her to break her solitary routine and reinvigorate her love life. But as Mahin opens herself up to new romance and new friends, what begins as an unexpected encounter quickly evolves into an unpredictable, unforgettable evening.

The realities of women’s lives in Iran have hardly ever been told, but this is the story of a woman living on her own, determinedly independent in a society that prefers women to be inconspicuous. Based on the reality of the everyday lives of middle-class women in Iran, My Favourite Cake takes a close look at a woman’s loneliness as she enters her senior years.

My Favourite Cake is a playful tale about hope and joy in life, as well as the absurdity of death.

“A lovely and bittersweet comedy of moments seized in the autumn of life.”
– Danny Leigh, Financial Times

“My Favourite Cake is radical and heartwarming. Above all, it’s a reminder that in a world where everyone is scrutinised and judged, pure love remains timeless.”
– Whelan Barzey, Time Out

“As well as everything else, this wonderfully sweet and funny film will contribute to the debate about whether repressive regimes are the nursery of artistic greatness.”
– Peter Bradshaw, Guardian
