PAST LIVES (M)

What if the lover who never was is ‘the one’?
The Korean concept of ‘inyeon’ holds multitudes, suggesting that two souls colliding is a twist of joyous fate, perhaps predestined, but is one that can also leave a heart bound in inescapable doubt when their paths diverge. This is the case for Nora, who can’t seem to quite move on from the memory of her childhood friend. This swooning romance follows a Korean woman whose heart is torn by the road not taken.

Destined to be an instant modern classic, PAST LIVES from South Korean-Canadian writer and director Celine Song stars Greta Lee (Russian Doll), John Magaro (First Cow) and Teo Yoo (Decision to Leave) in a tale of old flames and forking paths.

Nora (Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo) form a special bond growing up in Seoul, where they walk each other home from school every day. They’re split apart when Nora’s family immigrates to Toronto, but their bond remains. Two decades pass by and Nora is now a playwright living in New York with her husband Arthur (Magaro). When Hae Sung comes to visit Nora, they spend one fateful week together, confronting notions of destiny, love and the choices that make a life.

Bringing an exquisite, disarmingly subtle approach to the provocation, “Can you ever go back, and at what cost to present happiness?”, this disarming and heartfelt romance packs an emotional punch.

“A movie that liberates your tears and makes you fall in love with it. It is almost assuredly predestined to be the single best movie you see this year.”
Rolling Stone Magazine

“Celine Song makes a quietly spectacular writing-directing debut with Past Lives, a lyrical slow burn of a film that expertly holds back wellsprings of emotion, until it unleashes a deluge.”
The Washington Post

“A soaring, decades-spanning romance that will make you catch your breath.”
Hollywood Reporter
