Sujo [M]

Winner of the Sundance World Cinema Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and Mexico’s official entry to the Oscars, Sujo is different from any Mexican cartel drama you have seen before. It follows a cartel-born child from infancy to manhood in an epic life-affirming odyssey.

Sujo, the name of a freedom-loving stallion, is the unusual name given to a young lad by his sicario (hitman) father. A cartel gunman from a small Mexican town, the father falls foul of his fellow gang members and is murdered, leaving Sujo, his beloved four-year-old son, an orphan and in danger.
Sujo narrowly escapes death with the help of his intrepid aunt who raises him in the isolated countryside amidst hardship, poverty, and the constant peril associated with his identity.

When Sujo enters his rebelliousness teens, in a seemingly inevitable rite of passage he joins the local cartel. Then as a young man, Sujo attempts to make his life anew, away from the violence of his hometown. But when his father’s legacy catches up with him, he comes face-to-face with what appears to be his destiny.

“An optimistic entry in a traditionally brutal genre, Sujo is a story about defying gravity. If anything, it’s more like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, as the filmmakers check in on Sujo (played by two actors) over the years”
– Variety

‘A work of tremendous lyrical potency, even more intricate in meaning and scope than the pair’s earlier stunner [Identifying Features], Sujo thunderously demonstrates why [writer-directors Astrid] Rondero and [Fernanda] Valadez stand among those soon to be regarded as the new masters of Mexican cinema.’
– IndieWire.

“Its undertow of menace is expertly sustained, and its dread buffered by hope.”
– David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter

“Narratively speaking, the story is most exciting when the risks to Sujo are greatest. But the moments that stick with you in the days and weeks afterward are the quiet ones…”
– Variety
